Canonical Tag / Rel=Canonical

A canonical tag (or rel=”canonical”) is an HTML attribute used by a site owner to specify their preferred or master version of a web page among a set of pages with identical or very similar content. Implementing a canonical tag helps to consolidate link equity and prevent duplicate content issues in a search engine’s index. Search engines may choose to honor or ignore canonical tags depending on whether the designated canonical URL is deemed the most appropriate source.
