A factory outlet is a discount retail outlet that is owned and operated by the manufacturer. These stores typically carry the manufacturer’s out-of-stock, discounted, seasonal, or off-the-shelf (slightly defective) merchandise.
The purpose of a factory outlet is to clear out the manufacturer’s inventory while generating additional revenue and maintaining the image of the main brand (by selling the surplus in a separate location). They are a form of vertical marketing system (VMS).
