Icons are a valuable tool in web design. They represent concepts and ideas that either don’t need to be written in words, or the words we would use would build significantly less trust in users.
One such icon, for example, is the padlock. If we use it to symbolize security and protection, the message will be conveyed much more strongly than if we promised the same thing in words.
The following are the rules that we should follow when using icons:
Adaptability
The icons that you use on your site should be adaptive. That is, they should be flexible in size and look good at different resolutions. Make sure that the icons are distinguishable on computers, tablets and phones. If necessary, simplify the details on lower resolutions.
Style
We call the appearance of the icon style. Icons can be multi-colored or single-colored, outline or filled, with or without shadows, with or without a background, with rounded or sharp corners.
In addition, icons also differ in their rendering style.
Colors
Black and white, flat or gradient. Choose the right colors for your icons. It is highly recommended that the icons follow the color scheme of the brand.
Naming
It is important to name the files on your site, both icons and images and/or photos that you use in a way that is correct and understandable for you and search engines. Do not name the icons after the actions for which you will use them. For example, a pencil icon should not be named “redaktirane”/ “edit”, as you could use it in other places on the site, for example on your contacts page.
