Keywords are defined as words or phrases that accurately describe the content of a website or a specific web page. They are essential because they help search engines match these content elements to relevant search queries.

When an individual types a word or phrase into a search engine, they are seeking results that are pertinent to that keyword. Therefore, for a website to achieve a high ranking in the search results for a given keyword, the website must thoroughly optimize its content for that specific term.

This means the keyword should appear naturally throughout the content, including in post titles, section subheadings, image alt text, and the main body text. However, using too many repeated keywords on a website can actually damage its ranking. This practice is called ‘keyword stuffing’ and is something that must be avoided, as it is considered unethical and can result in penalties.

Effective keywords should ideally demonstrate both a high monthly search volume and, critically, low competition. Additionally, long-tail keywords (which contain three or more words) are sometimes proven to be more successful than shorter, broader keywords.
