Meta keywords are a type of meta tag that can be added within the section of a web page’s HTML source code. They are not visible to the page’s visitors.

More than a decade ago, meta keywords may have been considered a ranking factor because they signaled to search engine bots what a page’s content was primarily about.

However, all major search engines, including Google and Bing, have officially confirmed that they are no longer considered in their ranking algorithms. The only possible exception is the Russian search engine Yandex, which may still utilize them (though this remains uncertain). Google likely began ignoring meta keywords because they were so widely and frequently abused.

Although meta keywords hold no current SEO value, some marketers may still opt to use them as part of the internal tagging system within their Content Management System (CMS). They can potentially help in internal organization and aid in avoiding the creation of duplicate keywords and cannibalized content.
