Perception

Perception is the process by which people select, organize, and interpret information to form an understanding or view of the world. It is subjective and directly influences consumer behavior.

As people are exposed to a vast array of stimuli, they filter information through selective attention (noticing only what is relevant), selective distortion (interpreting information to support their beliefs), and selective retention (remembering what supports their attitudes). Marketers must overcome these filters.
