Salutary Products

Salutary products are products that are not particularly attractive (they provide little immediate satisfaction) but may be of benefit to consumers in the distant future (long-term benefits). Examples include life insurance, healthy but not particularly tasty foods, or exercise equipment.

The principle of social marketing requires that companies find ways to make salutary products more attractive (to make them desirable) in order to increase short-term satisfaction while maintaining long-term benefit.
