Communication Glossary

Counterprogramming is a form of media strategy where a broadcaster or content creator schedules programming that targets a different audience or niche than what competitors are offering at the same time.

The essence of the tactic is to schedule a program that is in an entirely different genre than the one that the rival is running, with the goal of attracting a different audience instead of competing for the same one. That way, one can maximize the overall audience share.
