Development Journalism

Mass Communication

Development journalism is a branch of journalism that focuses on reporting issues related to social and economic development, especially in developing countries.

Unlike mainstream or sensational journalism, its aim is to inform, educate, and empower the public about developmental challenges and solutions.

Development journalism examines the process of development, incuding, but not limited to, policy-making, implementation, impact, and the voices of ordinary people. The goal is to promote progress, equity, and accountability.

Usually, it focuses on highly underreported issues like poverty, health, education, environment, and rural development with the goal of holding the authorities accountable for their promises and outcomes.

While its goal is to amplify the marginalized voices, it is obvious how it could be used to put the government in an uncomfortable situation or to make them look bad.
